Once I understood the patterns and the likely root cause—or the demon—I was fighting, I became restless in my spirit.
What I realized is that some people become victims of this evil legality by consenting, whether they meant to or not. For instance, Esau signed no written document when he sold his birthright to his brother; he probably didn’t even mean it. He was hungry, needed food, and gave a side comment saying, “You can have my birthright.” But when the time came to receive the blessing of the firstborn, he was refused, and the rightful firstborn—the one he had sold his birthright to—received it. Sin could also be a way of consenting. Deliberately doing what God may have warned you against. The Lord said to Cain: “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
Our parents could also consent, or someone else in our direct bloodline. So many possibilities but I realized regardless of how the demon gained legal ground, my only weapon is Jesus.
“And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” — 1 John 5:5
My mind drifted to Colossians 2:14–15, and I began to receive a new understanding. I saw it like this: Jesus approached my captors and said He wanted to free this slave. The demons asked, “What will You give in return?” Jesus replied, “Take Me instead.” They recognized that this was the Son of God. This was a far bigger deal than I could ever be. So they calculated and took Jesus, beat Him, and treated Him however they pleased.
In the process, Jesus asked for the slave document and tore it—even while being tortured.
The demons soon realized that Jesus would terrorize them because He is the Son of God. Their best option, they thought, was to completely get rid of Him. So they nailed Him to the cross. But they held on to me and did not fulfill their end of the bargain, because this is who they are: liars, thieves, and cheats.
Then Jesus surprised them by coming back to life. Just imagine someone murdering another person, only for the one who was killed to suddenly reappear. That murderer would live in constant fear of revenge—and even more, knowing that the person can never be killed again, for it is appointed unto man once to die.
So the demons, while still holding on to me, live in constant fear. But Jesus didn’t just rise, He gave me, the victim, the authority to become the victor. To terrorize and hold captive my captors.
But I only have this authority when I am in Jesus—when I surrender fully to His lordship.
In Esther 8, when King Ahasuerus issued a decree to have the Jews killed, as Haman desired, the king could not cancel the written decree. Another decree had to replace it—one that allowed the Jews to defend themselves.
It’s the same with heaven. There had to be a new covenant that rendered the old one powerless. With God, there is no in-between. You are either for Jesus or against Him, either under Jesus’ covenant or under satan’s.
I don’t know how old you are, but have you ever thought of dying without making any significant impact? Just going in circles? There is more to life, and you can only begin to truly live after you are delivered from the obstacles that hinder who God says you are. Someone who is caged is not dreaming about tomorrow—they are simply thinking about how to be free. But after freedom, the possibility becomes endless.
Desire to be free and to remain free. Ask the Holy Spirit to create that desire in your heart.
At the end of this series, I will post a video in the intercession page where we pray through these steps together. May the Lord Jesus, who granted me my victory, grant you yours, and may you begin to live a life of purpose afterward.
